Hi, I was at the school from '59 to '64, I wonder what happened to Colin Glendenning and Jeremy Higgs, just a couple of names I recall. Can't say that my stay was the best time, as I kept being caned for one reason or another. Loved the sport though, which helped me throughout my life. I am now living in Spain and coaching Rugby in Sweden. Bit of a commute but enjoyable Just wonder if anybody remembers me?

Hi All,

I have just got off the ‘phone to Mr Thomas (English master 1962-1971) and he asked me to posted a message to say how much he enjoyed his day at Snaresbrook last Saturday. He wanted me to say thanks to everyone who came and talked to him as he doesn’t have a computer to post a message himself.

In particular thanks to Keith Jemmett and the organising committee. Mr T. also asked me to send thanks to Joe Migdal who slipped him a music CD called “Chances” which he has played and really enjoyed and like to would recommend.

I would like to add my thanks and appreciation also and to say it was great talking with Tony Brimble, Reg and Ron, Nicky Bambridge, Robert Lock and his brother, Linda Scott and all the others who’s names I can’t remember. What a great day. I can’t wait until the next one.

Cheers!

Just found the site from Friends Reunited. Attended Infant and Junior departments 1946-51(ish). Nicknamed 'Dog'
Remember one or two names and faces.
I must have been one of the last to transfer to Reeds at 11.
Now semi-retired from primary teaching (helping Graduate Trainees with University of Hertfordshire) but living on south coast in Christchurch, Dorset.

Thanks to all for a great day, although sad to see so few I knew in the 1958-62 era. I know many emigrated so perhaps this was understandable. The service was especially moving and great credit is due to the Crown Courts for maintaining the chapel in such fine and "original" condition (although I just about remember it before it was renovated to its present state). Was particularly nice to meet the 'girls' and realise what we missed on those twist and jive nights in the theatre on a Saturday night!

Am now semi-retired from a career that seems to have touched most bases, from caretaking and part-time cleaning to most recently being a partner in a magazine publishing company, and taking in press, PR and journalism along the way.

Would love to hear from Graham Batham, Geoffrey Nebel, M. North, 'Yetti' Graham, Chris Gittings, Hubert Trinder, Mervyn Hulbert, Jonathan Baldwin and any others who were in 5A in 1962-63 or amy, such as Jonathan Griffiths or the Harrison brothers, who were in Babylon (Nelson) senior dorm in that year. The only one who seemed to make it on Saturday (and apologies if I am mistaken) was 'Monkey' Ford and what a pleasure it was to meet him and his daughter.

Also, if Paul Goodchild reads this, please do get in touch (I was changing email addresses when I wrote him some months back via Penine Pens and his reply may not have reached me).

Roll on 2011!

PS: Managed to lose or mislay my copy of the order of service on the way home so if anyone can post the title and composer/arranger of the anthem sung mid way through the service I would be particularly grateful.

It was great to see so many of you at the re-union yesterday, which was the first occasion that I'd been back to the old school since 1970. Special thanks to those of you who recognised me - sorry if I didn't instantly recognise some of you! Hope to keep in touch from now on, as it was really lovely to recount old times and happenings with everybody I spoke to.

Don't know what happened to my name on that last message?? But in case anyone's interested it was from STEVE "PONNY" PONSFORD. Haven't been called "Ponny" since I left RWS but I may revert to the name after seeing the statue of Bill at the MCG. I remember we won a cricket bat he'd signed in the last year of junior school. Maybe someone else remembers that?

Hi to all. Can't believe I've just happened on this site! I was at RWS '67-'71 (Nelson '68-'71 under "Old Bill" Turner) and left at the end of my 3rd year when the school closed.
I see I've been mentioned in despatches by Stephen "Fertie" Foster and Nigel Hobro and it'd be good to hear from them and anyone else who remembers me after all these years. Also from Tony Brimble who seems to be a near neighbour these days. Maybe we can catch up over a "coldie" one day Tony?

Hello all,

I was at RWS '65 to '70. I only discovered this site last night and have only given it a brief scan; but the names have certainly struck a chord.

I was in Nelson house with "Tugs" at the helm. Tony Brimble, Bainbridge, Adlam, Hurley, Baldwin, McWhinney, Newrick, Carpenter, Fitzpatrick and Dinsdale are only a few of the names I remember.

I have many memories of the school's inhabitants, and antics. In the main I believe my time at the RWS gave me the firm footing required to stepping out into the world.

If my name is familiar to you please feel free to contact me.

All the best.

Just came across this site. Have looked in previous years, but found nothing. Certainly a lack of "old Girls" I have mixed emotions about my experiences there!! I remember Christine Deakin, Anne Marie Stockwell, Ann Drake,Head Girl 1962? Janet Reay (great pianist and head girl 1960/61), Beryl Towell, Janet Harrington, Susan Randall. Oh Yes. and Anne Morgan (left 1962)and Cheryl Kennedy, Josie Williams ( left early (Transferred) before 1963 - Anybody out there remember any of these girls?
I visited Hyde Hall in 1997. They certainly did a great job restoring the stable, rose garden, main hall and building. I met one of the residents - terrific lady. we had tea and talked story about the history etc. I also told her about some of the escapades we used to get up to. Shhhh.

Would love to hear from someone

Dear All,

My partner and I have just spent a very enjoy day with Mr Thomas (English Master 1962-1971). He asked me to pass on his good wishes and seasons greetings to everyone who remembers him. Mr T adds that he is hoping to be at next years reunion and is looking forward to meeting some of his former pupils but not without some aprehension!

I will do my best to make sure that he comes along. It will be interesting to see how Nigel Adlam and Tony Brimble get on with him now!!

Have a great Christmas and look forward to seeing you next year.

Just a shameless reminder to everyone to try and support the Royal Wanstead Children's Foundation in any way you can. We need more donations to help us help more vulnerable children (just like we all once were). For details of our work and how to contribute, please visit our site.

I was at RWS but unclear on dates, probably early 60's in Juniors for a couple of years then 1 year only in seniors. Housemaster was from Ceylon and called Abeysekara or similar.I remember, and sadly can recall the songs word for word, starring in a play we did about a giant called Grindlestein and performing it in the big (or so it seemed) theatre. Ring any bells with anyone out there?

I have today received messages from Linda Walsh (wife of John) & Kelvin Evans to say that John Walsh has been admitted to Worthing Hospital following a heart attack. The latest info is that he has had an operation and is recovering well.
John left the RWS in 1965 and was a member of Athens/Montgomery.
I will let you know when I hear anymore on his progress.

I'm an old boy of Reed's school. A number of my contemporaries had begun their school careers at RWS. I was just Googling to find out more about RWS and was surprised to discover that, when I was at Reed's in the 1950s RWS was still educating over 11s. This made me wonder why pupils would switch from RWS to Reed's.
