I was at the school during 1962/63. I then ran away and never returned. I remember the school bully always picked me for a sparring partner in boxing and knocked the stuffing out of me. He also liked to hit another boy (Chorcarin?) untill he cried!

Thanks for your sad message Alf about the news of M.P.Davies. Always considered him to be a good teacher. If my memory serves me right we were given a half days holiday after he had won the 'Three Peaks Race'. He also did a lots of work to create a good group of boys who went on to represent the RWS in County Cross Country events.

Interesting to read comments about Ernie Thomas. I remember this man for carrying a cane up the sleeve of his gown and on one occasion using it several times across my back! Major Baker was the Maths teacher and generally sent me to sleep. What was the deputy head's name, the one with the false hand? He could certainly deliver a blow. Makes me appear a bad boy and I am sure that I was an Angel)))

Christ it's nearly 50 years since i left RWS.
Memories Yes, Good & Bad.
One springs to mind which nowadays sounds quite funny but at the time was pretty serious.
My House Master at the time was "Flo"who had been down the "Pub" and on his return was told by a Monitor or Prefect a Boy had been talking after lights out.
He went to his room and returned with a Golf Club and started hitting the Boy with it in his bed. To say the least there was no talking afterwards.
best wishes to everyone who accesses this website

In reference to recent post about Mr Wiffen I was in his house at the time of his dive and even now I remember that day well. He certainly liked naked boys but I don't actually remember him touching any of us, not saying it didn't happen, just don't remember it.
Whatever happened it was long ago and he paid the price so best forgotten. Boys of that age are very resilient and I had forgotten all about it until this post. Was often unhappy at RWS but more often reasonably content, probably like most children at any school.

!959-64. Had many a caning from Lavvy; guilty as charged every time. Babylon/Nelson house.Attended re-union in 2005; really good to see a few old mates: Kelvin(Taffy)Evans, Michael Pattrick, Rod Green, Russell Wild et al. Very mixed feelings about my time there; we were all away from home for various reasons. But hey, it didn't kill us!

Re Heather Carroll’s message 29.01.12 the Wiggins she refers to was in fact Mr Wiffen who taught us Scripture and PE in the Juniors and was Housemaster of South. I transferred from the Juniors aged 11 to Reed’s School in summer 1953 with several other boys and we learned that Wiffen committed suicide the following year. He had been physically molesting various boys aged 8-11 in the Juniors for some time and when one of the confused victims mentioned this to his elder brother he reported the matter. East Dorm for boys was above the chapel with a metal fire escape leading down to the playground and when Wiffen was challenged probably by Headmaster Edgecombe he ran through East Dorm and threw himself from the fire escape. At that time of day the junior boys and girls were having tea and they were deliberately held back in the dining room for a little while before being led back to their quarters by a different route. This received widespread press publicity. Some of these offences took place in Wiffen’s room and several boys have since commented how personally interested Wiffen was in touching their bodies while they were drying themselves after sports, with the excuse that he had to make sure they were properly dry. What a beast! Perhaps others can correct or amplify this.

Heather Carrol |
Does anyone remember the music teacher Mr Wiggins i think was his name, who killed himself in the 1950s? Mr Edgecombe was the head teacher at the time. I was a pupil at the school from five until twelve in the 1940's/50's. What awful memories!
